How the crypto profit calculator works
Profit is what you receive from the sale minus everything you paid to buy. Exchange fees are charged on both trades, so they come off the sale proceeds and add to the cost.
Proceeds = Sell price × Quantity × (1 − fee)
ROI = (Proceeds − Cost) ÷ Cost
Break-even = Buy price × (1 + fee) ÷ (1 − fee)
In the US, crypto is property for tax purposes. A gain on coins held a year or less is taxed as ordinary income; held longer, it gets long-term capital gains rates of 0%, 15% or 20%. Use the capital gains calculator to estimate the tax on your result.
Worked example
You buy 0.5 BTC at $30,000 and sell at $36,000 with a 0.5% fee each way. Cost is $15,075, proceeds are $17,910, and net profit is $2,835.00, an ROI of 18.81%. Fees took $165 of the $3,000 price gain. You would have broken even selling at $30,301.51.
Frequently asked questions
How is crypto profit taxed in the US?
As a capital gain. Short-term gains (one year or less) are taxed as ordinary income and long-term gains at 0%, 15% or 20% depending on income.
Do fees count toward cost basis?
Yes. Buying fees increase your basis and selling fees reduce your proceeds, both of which lower taxable gain.
What is the break-even price?
The sell price at which proceeds after the selling fee exactly cover what you paid including the buying fee.
Does this work for stocks?
Yes. The math is the same for any asset bought and sold with a percentage fee.
