How the email marketing roi calculator works
Campaign revenue is a funnel: delivered emails produce clicks, a share of clicks become orders, and orders have an average value.
Orders = Clicks × Purchase rate
Revenue = Orders × Average order value
ROI = (Revenue − Cost) ÷ Cost
Since Apple Mail Privacy Protection launched in 2021, open rates are inflated by automatic image loading, so clicks are a better starting point. Campaign cost should include the email platform's share for the send, design time and any discount you offer. Revenue per 1,000 emails lets you compare campaigns of different sizes.
Worked example
Sending to 10,000 subscribers with a 2.5% click rate brings 250 clicks. If 3% of clickers buy at a $70 average order, that is 7.5 orders and $525.00 of revenue. Against a $100 campaign cost the ROI is 425%, or $52.50 per 1,000 emails.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good email click rate?
Around 2% to 3% of delivered emails is a common benchmark for marketing newsletters, higher for small engaged lists.
Why not use open rate?
Privacy features load images automatically, so many opens are not real people reading.
How do I calculate email ROI?
Subtract campaign cost from revenue it generated, then divide by the cost.
Is email marketing profitable?
Often, because sending costs are low, but results depend on list quality and offers.
