How the final grade calculator works
Your course grade is a weighted average of your current grade (everything before the final) and the final exam. Solving that average for the final exam score gives the answer.
Final needed = (Target − Current × (1 − w)) ÷ w
Here w is the final's weight as a decimal, so 30% becomes 0.30. Your current grade should be the weighted grade shown in your gradebook, covering all work so far. If some categories still have ungraded work, the result is an estimate. The best and worst case figures show the range of course grades still possible.
Worked example
You have an 88% and want a 90% in a class where the final counts for 30%. The final needed is (90 − 88 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = (90 − 61.6) ÷ 0.3 = 94.67%. Scoring 100% would give you a 91.6% course grade, and skipping the final would leave you with 61.6%.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate what I need on my final?
Subtract your current grade times (1 − final weight) from your target, then divide by the final weight.
What if I need over 100%?
The target is not reachable with the final alone unless there is extra credit.
Does this work with points instead of percentages?
Convert your points to a percentage first, and use the final's share of total points as its weight.
What if my teacher drops the lowest test?
Recalculate your current grade with the drop applied before entering it.
