Tips for using the cooking converter

  • Weighing flour is far more consistent than scooping, which can pack in 20% more.
  • A US stick of butter is 8 tablespoons, ½ cup or 113 g.
  • Dry and liquid measuring cups hold the same volume but are designed for different filling methods.

How the cooking converter works

Volume units in US recipes are linked by simple ratios, and the calculator converts everything through milliliters.

1 cup = 16 tbsp = 48 tsp = 8 fl oz = 236.59 mL
1 tbsp = 3 tsp = 14.79 mL
Grams = cups × grams per cup for the ingredient

Converting volume to weight depends on density, so a cup of flour weighs far less than a cup of honey. The gram values used are typical figures from baking references: all-purpose flour 120 g per cup (spooned and levelled), granulated sugar 200 g, packed brown sugar 220 g and butter 227 g (two sticks). UK and Australian cups are 250 mL, slightly larger than the US cup.

Worked example

A recipe calls for 1 cup of flour. That is 120 g, 236.59 mL or 16 tablespoons. Half a cup of butter is one stick, about 113.5 g. Three tablespoons of honey is 0.1875 cup, or about 64 g.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams is a cup of flour?

About 120 g for all-purpose flour spooned into the cup and levelled; scooping directly can give 140 g or more.

How many tablespoons are in a cup?

16.

How many mL is a US cup?

236.59 mL. Recipes often round it to 240 mL.

Is a fluid ounce the same as an ounce of weight?

Only for water, approximately. A fluid ounce measures volume; an ounce measures weight.
