How the dps calculator works
Average damage per second combines how hard and how often you hit, with critical hits raising the average.
DPS = Damage per hit × Attacks per second × Crit multiplier
Crit damage is entered as the total multiplier on a critical hit, so 200% means crits do double damage. Games define crit damage differently: some show it as a bonus (+50% means 150% total), so check your game's tooltip. The upgrade line compares adding 5% crit chance with adding 10% base damage to show which is worth more for your current stats. Armour, resistances and damage-over-time effects are not included.
Worked example
A weapon that hits for 100 damage 1.5 times a second, with a 25% crit chance and 200% crit damage, averages 100 × 1.5 × 1.25 = 187.5 DPS, compared with 150 without crits. An extra 10% damage would add 18.8 DPS, while 5% more crit chance would add 7.5, so damage is the better upgrade here.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate DPS?
Multiply damage per hit by attacks per second, then by the average crit multiplier.
What is the crit multiplier?
1 + crit chance × (crit damage − 1). At 50% chance and 200% damage it is 1.5.
Is crit chance or crit damage better?
It depends on your current values. A common guideline in games with a 1:2 ratio is to aim for twice as much crit damage bonus as crit chance.
Does attack speed affect crits?
Yes. More attacks per second means more chances to crit, so DPS scales with both.
