How the length converter works
Every length is converted to meters, the SI base unit, then to the unit you want. Since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, US and imperial units are defined exactly in metric terms.
1 ft = 12 in = 0.3048 m · 1 yd = 3 ft = 0.9144 m
1 mi = 5,280 ft = 1,609.344 m
Metric units step by powers of ten: 10 mm in a centimeter, 100 cm in a meter and 1,000 m in a kilometer. Results are rounded to six decimal places, enough for any practical measurement. The US survey foot, retired at the end of 2022, differed by only two parts per million.
Worked example
A 10 ft room is 10 × 0.3048 = 3.048 meters, which is also 120 inches, 3.33 yards or 304.8 cm. A 5 km race is 5,000 ÷ 1,609.344 = 3.107 miles, and a 26.2-mile marathon is 42.165 km.
